Kidney Awareness Time (KAT) Walk Raised Awareness and $400,000 for Kidney Education and Prevention Programs
Burlingame, Calif., September 25, 2021 – The Kidney TRUST hosted its 2nd annual Kidney Awareness Time Walk-a-thon (KAT Walk) in 54 cities in 28 states over the weekend of September 15–16, attracting over 4,000 walkers, 1,500 volunteers and raising more than $400,000 for kidney disease education and prevention programs. The KAT Walk is a nationwide, volunteer-driven event designed to raise awareness and funds for public education and testing, all in an effort to delay or prevent chronic kidney disease (CKD).
Diabetes and high blood pressure are the leading causes of kidney disease. Twenty million American adults – about one in eleven – already have chronic kidney disease (CKD) and most do not even know it. It is estimated that 350,000 Americans with kidney failure are on dialysis. African Americans, Hispanics, Pacific Islanders, Native Americans, and seniors (65 and over) are at increased risk of developing this illness. Early detection and education can help prevent the progression of kidney disease to kidney failure.
“All across the nation thousands of people, including many kidney dialysis patients, walked to raise awareness and to let people know that kidney disease can be prevented,” said Barbara Lawson, president of The Kidney TRUST. “The success of this year’s KAT Walk will allow the Kidney TRUST to expand its testing program and provide much-needed assistance to dialysis patients.”
The Kidney TRUST, an independent public charity, was formed to increase awareness of kidney disease through public education and testing programs so that progression of CKD to kidney failure can be delayed or prevented. In 2007 The TRUST is piloting a low-cost testing and screening program and a financial assistance program for CKD patients.
