MAY 2008

On March 13 the atrium at Chevron Corporation’s offices in downtown Houston was the stage for an innovative new approach to increase awareness around chronic kidney disease (CKD). It was World Kidney Day and a team of ten medical technicians and volunteers from The Kidney TRUST provided free kidney disease screenings to Chevron employees, including immediate on-site results.

Nearly 150 people took advantage of the opportunity to learn about the potential risk factors for chronic kidney disease (CKD) and to participate in a quick and simple test that measures kidney function. Upon registering for the screening, participants received a variety of educational materials about CKD and within minutes of being tested, they received their results. In order for participants to better understand the results, onsite counselors were available to better explain the results and answer any questions. Employees who received results indicating an increased risk were encouraged to follow up with a physician. MORE >>

TRUST Launches Free Rapid-Screening Program

The goal of the TRUST’s free rapid-testing program, which was launched in October 2007, is to identify individuals who have signs of kidney impairment. Along with learning their screening results on-site, participants receive materials that offer education about CKD and its prevention and are encouraged to seek medical follow-up as appropriate.

The TRUST’s screening program is carried out in non-medical settings such as large employer workplaces and community health fairs. In 2008 screenings are being held across the United States, including California, Colorado, District of Columbia, Michigan, Ohio, Texas and Virginia. Screenings will also take place at DaVita KAT Walks Across America™ in 12 states.

DaVita Events Will Benefit the TRUST in 2008

The Kidney TRUST is delighted that the 2008 DaVita KAT Walks Across America™ will once again benefit TRUST programs. DaVita, Inc, one of the largest dialysis providers in the United States, has designed these events to raise awareness and funds for public education and screening for chronic kidney disease (CKD).

This year the DaVita KAT Walks will take place in 20 locations in 16 states, kicking off on June 29th in Virginia Beach, Virginia and wrapping up in Orlando, Florida on November 23rd. Last year’s KAT Walks attracted over 4,000 walkers, 1,500 volunteers and raised more than $500,000 for the TRUST.

The second annual Tour DaVita will take place September 15-18, 2008 in Wisconsin, and the TRUST is honored to be the recipient of funds raised by the 300 participating cyclists. Last year 211 cyclists rode 230 miles and raised over $600,000 for kidney awareness. For more information, visit www.tourdavita.org.
